Sideways (Alexander Payne 2004)

Another brilliant film from Alexander Payne. A marvellous story about two friends going on a pre-wedding trip to the California central coast wine country. It is the flawed personalities of the two characters that make them so human, so likeable in spite of their sometimes abusive and neurotic behaviour.
Sideways has a lot in common with About Schmidt. They are both about regular human beings searching for happiness and for some kind of meaning in their life. Payne seems to have a remarkable ability for creating less than perfect but real and human characters and for developing narratives that can engage the audience on a deeper level than most films today can. Paul Giamati (where is his Oscar nomination?) and Thomas Haden Church are superb. Sideways has my vote for Best Director (which it won’t win) and for best Adapted Screenplay (which it might just win).
